Presser Bullets: Ryan Day Still Sees No Separation in Quarterback Battle, Matt Patricia Excited for First Ohio State Spring Game…

As the Ohio State Buckeyes gear up for their annual spring game, head coach Ryan Day and newly-appointed defensive coordinator Matt Patricia addressed the media, offering key insights into the state of the team and its preparation for the 2025 season.

Quarterback Battle Still Undecided

One of the most pressing topics during Ryan Day’s press conference was the ongoing quarterback battle. Despite several spring practices under their belts, Day confirmed that there is still “no separation” between the leading contenders for the starting role. The competition remains tight between Devin Brown, Lincoln Kienholz, and freshman phenom Julian Sayin.

“There hasn’t been that moment yet where one guy clearly pulls away,” Day said. “Each of them brings something different to the table, and we’re seeing good progress — but not a definitive leader right now.”

Day emphasized that the coaching staff is looking not only for arm talent and athleticism, but also leadership, decision-making, and composure in high-pressure situations. He hinted that the spring game could play a significant role in evaluating how each quarterback performs in front of fans and in a more game-like setting.

Patricia spoke at length about the opportunity to mold young talent and adapt his professional experience to the college game. His primary focus this spring has been installing a versatile, aggressive defensive scheme while building relationships with players.

“This is a smart, fast, physical group,” Patricia noted. “We’re focusing on communication, fundamentals, and bringing that edge every snap. I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen so far.”
